A Curated Exhibit Up for Auction

Rago Auctions, in conjunction with The Apthorp showcased a curated exhibit of modern 20th C. items that were soon to be put up for auction. I thought this was a clever way of viewing the lots of furniture and art, in a more realistic setting, similar to your home, and not on a display shelf. You might be more likely to connect with something, thereby being more apt to bid on it ~ and bid HIGH! I did not have a catalog with me during the viewing, honestly, I had no idea what some of the pieces were worth. I had hoped to go to this particular auction, but I was away. These are some of the results:

Most people think of auctions as being intimidating (I did before I tried it) ~ but they're not, as long as you have an understanding of how they work. You can really have FUN with them! Become familiar with the terms/conditions of the auction house you are interested in and jump right in. What have you got to lose? Nothing but $$$!

I'm Loving ~The Abajour Light

The other day I fell in love with these little beauties made by Baxter, out of Italy. They're sexy, cool lighting in jewel tone colors with a tongue-in-cheek kind of vibe

Besides the fabulous knot floor lamp, wrapped in colorful heavy duty cotton, the velvety smooth shades and pendents imbue a sense of stylish chic into any space

The sconces come in many fun shapes and I believe mixing and matching just might be in order

While the floor lamp retails for $3,600.00, if it was only one of a few things in a room ~ I think you've made a point, as in exclamation!

Deconstructing A Chair ~

If you have good bones, the rest is about making it pretty

I am a BIG fan of reupholstering furniture. Granted, it is generally as expensive as buying new, but I like the "green" factor. If it's a family heirloom, means something to a client, or is just built well and looks good but needs a little makeover, reupholstering a piece is often a great alternative to trashing it.

Often I have things delivered to my upholsterer without much thought to the many steps involved. Let's take a look ~

While this Bergere chair did have a nice fabric on it, it did not go with our new color scheme and it needed some TLC

so we removed the old fabric and 1st layer of cotton

The chair was checked for cracks, nicks or any compromised components. This is when it would be touched up or glued if necessary.

The new fabric goes to the cutter and each section is measured TWICE and cut ONCE

Scraps of fabric are sewn around edges of each section to secure fabric on the chair. I thought this was brilliant because you don't waste expensive fabric inside the chair where it won't be seen

It then goes to the upholsterer where he applies a fresh layer of cotton and rebuilds the foundation with the existing foam. Then the fabric is tucked and stapled into place

The sewer makes the casings for the cushions and they are stuffed accordingly. We went with a 50/50 down fill for a slightly firmer feeling.

The sewer is also making the welting that we will wrap around the frame where it meets the fabric so any staples will be hidden and it really gives a finished appearance. However, in this case the welting was too thick and I didn't like the way it looked. We opted for a gimp trim instead

I don't want to show you too much ~ waiting for the BIG reveal. Suffice to say, the chairs came out great and the room is going to be GORGEOUS!

Just using the lighter fabric instantly made the chair more visually exciting and lighter in feel. The geometric pattern modernized the French style chair. I am really loving it now. It's clean and fresh, not dark and stodgy.

Think about how you can simply reupholster a piece that may not be working anymore.

Apthorp ~ A Study in Restraint (with a twist)

I stand corrected. I was wrong, par-donne, mi dispiace, förlåt!
I have been known to say that I don't need to see one more light fixture made from paper plates or a cocktail table made out of a door. Imagine my surprise when I walked into the magnificent sample apartment at the ultra exclusive, landmark building: Apthorp. There in the middle of this elegant, swanky apartment hung a giant, biomorphic looking light fixture. I commented on how interesting I thought it was and the rental agent said, "It's made from paper plates." I said "No way" and ran for a better view.

Bravo, Stephen Sills, the designer of this sample apartment. It is elegant and understated with it's grey and lilac tones subtly changing color in the shifting light.

Model 6M is a 2 bedrm, 2.5 bath, 1,838 sq. ft. beauty. It can be yours for a mere $3,950,000.00

When the big, red doors, like those to The Forbidden City opened, with the gold nailheads and foo dog knockers and the smoke cleared, I held my breath

From the royal court of the Qing Dynasty to the 1940's military inspired jackets of a bygone era, Jason romanticized, deconstructed and embellished classic pieces and reinterpreted them thru multicultural eyes.

Adding opulent touches like fur, gold, epaulets, studs and crystals, each piece was elevated and perfectly integrated into this magnificent collection.

When Is a Log Not a Log?

Fireplaces look unfinished to me without something in them. Not everyone uses their fireplace to burn wood. If that's the case, I am into "log alternatives." Faux wood if you will, but obvious faux wood; interesting faux wood, glamorous faux wood.

Jason Wu... "Is in the middle of a journey"

Mr. Wu has certainly been in the press a lot lately. With his new line for Target out this week, a new 9,000 sq. ft office, faucet and bath accessories for Brizo and his new Fall 2012 collection being unveiled at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, momentum continues to build.

Let's take a look at the new office/studio designed by Jesse Carrier and shots backstage at his Spring 2012 show. It looks like the design lines have been crossed once again. Who was influencing who?

The entry has a modern and classic mix of elements ~ just like his clothes.

3 steel tables occupy his showroom, the clothes the focal point.

The wallpaper created by Elizabeth Dow is made up of the pages of The New York Observer. Jason liked the pinkish coloring. He feels he is "making news" too.

Jason obviously loves to collaborate. For his Spring show he worked with graffiti artist KAWS, on these petal prints~ which lends him more street cred, as if he needed any.

The reception area shows his love of rough and refined elements. We may be getting a glimpse into what the future Jason Wu stores will look like. And you know it's only a matter of time.

What's next for Mr. Wu? A line of cosmetics and accessories: Home or fashion ~ hmmm, we'll have to wait and see. I'll try and clear that up later this week when I meet Jason Wu. I have a lot of questions!

I will be a quest of Brizo's for an informative, fun filled 3 days of exploration and innovation. I will meet other wonderful bloggers, learn more about this fashion forward company and their collaboration with Jason Wu. I am really excited!

Another trend in home decor that I picked up on at the Gift Fair and Arch. Digest Show is sculpture as art or 3-dimensional art. While not a new idea, it seems to be gaining a wider audience as more designers are exploring this medium. It's unexpected; especially when grouped together. It's dramatic, and you know I love me a little drama.

The art of the terrarium seems to be an ongoing trend that I starting noticing is picking up speed. At the New York Gift Show many vendors had their own versions ~

I used to make very elaborate ones as a kid, then I put newts and turtles in them. I know, hard to believe, right? I'm inspired, I think I'll pull out my glass containers and look for my gardening gloves.

Hanging or tabletop, simple or elaborate, I love that they are like a little world unto themselves. They are especially perfect in winter for a little "life" in an otherwise drab part of the house. Add sand, crystal, wood or shells; whatever your heart desires. There is no right or wrong!

While this is a great DIY project, some terrariums and terrarium makers have elevated it to high art. Hand blown glass vessels and unusual materials can mesmerize.

I love a good flame stitch pattern, It's retro and modern simultaneously. It's bright or bold or notice me neutral. The pattern is seeped in history. The Bargello motif or flame stitch, got its name from a needlepoint design laid out in a zig zag pattern, that was found on a chair in the Bargello Museum originating from the Bargello Palace in the 16th century.

It's a confident pattern that has come on strong again over the past several years, after it fell out a favor. It's not your grandmother's flame stitch any more. It's surprisingly flexible in its use. I can't think of anything it doesn't coordinated with!

Tony Duquette ~ More Is More

"Beauty, not luxury is what I value"

More is More was the fantastical, iconic, extravagant Tony Duquette motto and book title. The set, jewelry and fashion designer as well as all around bon vivant who died in 1999 left a treasure trove of riches in the trusty hands of his protege and partner Hutton Wilkinson, with Tony since 1972, who himself has a fascinating background. As the creative director and CEO of Tony Duquette Inc., Hutton has kept the dream alive and flourishing.

Tony established himself as one of the leading designers in LA, and later worldwide. He was the only American designer to garner a one-man show at The Louvre. He and his wife opened a studio in West Hollywood where Tony and Beegle (his wife's nickname) threw elaborate costumed parties and decorated to the nines.

You know you're about to enter a very special place with an entrance like this: "The Empire", Tony's Malibu home that burnt to the ground in the 1990's

Everything was an illusion and a study in layering, and Tony was a master at it! The Tea House was no exception, with the handmade pagoda-like chandelier and silk blankets between the red ceiling beams to resemble tiles.

Welcome to "Dawnridge", Tony and Beegle's beloved home, built in 1949. Hutton and his wife Ruth now reside there and have made it their own.

This drawing room was redecorated in 2000 by Hutton and Ruth as much for themselves as well as a tribute to their dear friends.

Hutton bought back the chandeliers that Tony installed in a bridal salon at Buffums Department Store in California when it went out of business and had them installed in his living room.

No room went "under decorated"

A stuffed alligator from New Guinea watches over company in the guestroom at Dawnridge, decorated in the '80's. Its tea paper ceiling and coromandel screens keep it timeless.

There's a lot to study in the study.

Houses were decorated, events were orchestrated, outfits were coordinated. I don't know where he/they found the time!

I am thrilled we can all have a little piece of Tony Duquette, Inc. Hutton has licensed products thru a number of fine companies, so we can experience the "more is more" lifestyle. Even if we have to edit, ALOT!

Furniture Through Baker. I have been dying to use the biomorphic table somewhere

Sumptuous silks so saturated with color and bold design; fabrics through Jim Thompson. That malachite fabric is too die for and many a decorator's dream.

Lighting through Remains Lighting and carpets through Roubini Rugs.
Tony was a big fan of Abolone shells and malachite and gold and starbursts and coral and color and animal prints and...you get the picture.

Now comes a jewelry collection through Coach. It is a magnificent tightly edited and in some cases limited edition collection based on Tony's precious jewelry designs. Tony was way ahead of his time. Any number of these pieces look like they were designed for today.

$125,000.00 on 1st Dibs or Coach's version for $498.00 ~ you decide.

Reed Krakoff was a huge fan of Tony Duquette's and bought many pieces that came up for sale at an estate auction thru Christie's. Reed( and his wife) have impeccable taste! The Coach team did a remarkable job sifting thru everything at Dawnridge: jewelry, old news articles; they studied his interiors, and even his wife's paintings in an effort to create a realistically stylized collection that any minimalist OR maximalist would die over.

Hutton is hoping to inspire a new generation of fans. He has more pieces waiting in the wings and I for one cannot wait to see what's next. Sometimes less is more, but sometimes more is more. The genius is knowing which to apply when.

Thank you Hutton, the barer of the torch, for keeping the flame alive. Oh, and next time you have a party ~ I'd love to attend!

Spotlight On: Rafael Viñoly

I won something ~ a book. I never win anything! Once, I won a Ralph Lauren blanket, then left it on the train. I didn't have it in my possession for 3 hours! That kind of s**t always happens to me! So imagine my surprise and delight.

I received this beautiful signed book by famed architect Rafael Viñoly. RV is a world-renowned architect and classical pianist originally from Uruguay.
What makes architecture so fulfilling for RV is the ability to satisfy his clients' needs while creating iconic works that take on a most unique form of artistic commitment.

While Rafael claims not to have a visual style, I think of more of his work than not as curvaceous, but also linier with a lot of symmetry and flooded with light; conforming harmoniously with the environment in which it sits~the buildings are a matter of proportion and relationships of form and space.

I knew RV built The Kimmel Center , which is quite a showpiece here in Philadelphia. It is like a building within a building and a rooftop deck, all under a dome.

I wondered what else in the area, if anything, RV designed. I was surprised to find out he designed one of the most spectacular estates (that happens to be for sale) this side of the Keystone State: Arbor Hill.

Arbor Hill is really a masterpiece, as are many of Mr. Viñoly's commissions. Rafael's residential projects are warm and fairly clean in design, but you feel connected to the space, not unlike his large commercial buildings. An artist (architect), like a musician, understands not only the image or song, but the note, and it's intrinsic relationship to the whole.

One Spot, Two Spot...

What is it about these brightly colored dots that speak to me? Is it the simplicity, the memory of the excitement I felt opening a fresh box of Crayola crayons when I was young and innocent?

The Complete Spot paintings by Damien Hirst will be on view at all 11 Gogosian Galleries around the world thru February. This is the first time a single artist has taken over ALL the galleries.

I was always a colorist, I’ve always had a phenomenal love of color… I mean, I just move color around on its own. So that’s where the spot paintings came from—to create that structure to do those colors, and do nothing. I suddenly got what I wanted. It was just a way of pinning down the joy of color.

Apparently the spot paintings represent the randomness in this world. The colors are chosen arbitrarily. If the painting comes off as successful; then it is unsuccessful. Endless multiplicity should give us reason to pause and consider each as part of a whole ~ going on into infinity. This might be the only time that is really possible, given his paintings sell for millions and it's rare to see so many in one place.

Whatever meaning is ascribed to them, I just find them visually exciting, just like Damien's spin art collection.

I can't speak about the dots without mentioning the spin art paintings. I love them too! The effectiveness of the design on a round canvas also has me swooning every time I see one.

Can you imagine walking in to your home every day and being greeted by that? It's like a giant smile.

Trendspotting: A Mondrian Moment

Is it just me or is Piet Mondrian's color blocked inspiration everywhere? The primary bright, grid based pattern was part of a style known as De Stiji, or neo plasticism. Those belonging to the movement wanted to express spiritual harmony and order in their art. The trend calls upon this artist's look most notably and is still prized, long after Mondrian's death.

Boyarde Messenger hand painted shoe for Charlotte Olympia

Whether it is fashion or home decor, we're all having a Mondrian moment.

In another homage to Piet, Shiro Kuramata created this cabinet for Cappellini. Cappellini creates furniture that is somewhere between imagination and reality. Reality is overrated.

YSL created a classic color blocked Mondrian dress in 1965 that just sold at auction for $47,000.00.

Moschino has their own version. Although it was designed years ago, it is considered a classic; I would wear it today (or at least when the weather warmed up).

A Museum Worthy Basket

I love decorating with baskets. These "master" baskets are really special! I stumbled upon them on the website Rainforest baskets. They are self proclaimed museum worthy baskets. That explains the price. They must be the Mercedes Benz of baskets. But, oh are they beautiful!

The baskets are woven by the Wounaan and Emberá tribes people of the rain forests of Panama and Columbia. They call the art Hösig Di. Chunga palm fibers and natural dyes are used to weave the baskets along with silk thread.

The baskets command upwards of $4,000.00 They are considered the most beautiful contemporary baskets in the world. To learn more about these colorful people and their baskets, see the book, Weaving the Scarlett Macaw.

We are all comfortable seeing a host and hostess chair that are different from the rest, a banquette coordinated with chairs, but what do you see when you look at these pictures?

The chairs are all brightly painted the same color. They all have the same feel. Both answers are correct ~ and that is exactly why the mismatched chairs work. They were brought together in a cohesive way.

There's a charm factor at work. Slipcovers can also be used to marry the mismatched and turn them into a coherent "cover" story. Sure, you could set up some folding chairs; anyone can do that. I love the mismatched idea and the look ~ like you quickly, informally gathered chairs from around your place, but my eye needs to be soothed. That's where the common color or similar feel in objects comes into play.

Wish List: The Grand Bazaar of Istanbul

One of the things on my wish list was this book ~

The Turkish Grand Bazaar is celebrating its 550 year anniversary this year and to mark the occasion, they had a special concert on Christmas Day by the talented pianist, Tulughan Ugurlu .

Photographed by Laziz Hamani, written by Serdar Gülgün, and published by Assouline, the incredible tome documents the spirit of the Turkish Grand Bazaar. If you get a chance, go. It is truly one of the most inspiring places I have ever been.

The book features a lot of the sights in the market. Stalls and stalls of rugs, lamps, leather goods, lighting, and pottery. You can't capture the smells and sounds or the feeling you get when you walk thru the foreign maze of hallways, but the book paints a close picture.

The Inner Bedestan is the oldest part of the market, built after the Ottoman invasion of Turkey by Sultan Menmet II the Conquerer in 1461. That's a lot of history. It is overwhelming walking the cobblestones in the footsteps of so many before you. The culture has been a source of inspiration for literally centuries of artisans.

This felt by far the most foreign of places I have seen and I want more!

I became completely enamored with the Iznik tiles I saw at The Topkapi Palace. Iznik was the center of Ottoman tile making, hence the name. The prized blue and white porcelain embellished with an Ottoman arabesque pattern was commissioned by the Sultan. He wanted to replicate the 15th century blue and white Chinese Ming porcelain that was felt to be so beautiful.

And ~ it comes wrapped in a delicious silk ikat fabric. This will be quite a beautiful edition to my library.

Any of these natural curiosities from Eduardo Garza could grace my table. Nothing says Christmas like a skull. You know what's weird? That I have said this before.

My husband and I started drinking Scotch before bed. It's like we're in a 50's movie. I would get this for him.

2. If possible, use pesticide free trees and greens, don't forget to RECYCLE.

3. Carry your own bags from store to store. How many trees would be saved if we did this?

5. Give gifts that give back, see last post or be cognizant to the idea, because these products are everywhere. For example:

TOMS uses pesticide free cotton and recycled materials. For every pair of shoes you buy, TOMS donates a pair to a child in need. I hear they're quite comfy.

Buying a product, making a donation, supporting a heifer, all gifts that keep on giving. Isn't that what the holidays are about? Others will be GREEN with envy that they didn't think of being so altruistic!

I don't know which Lauren Bush Lauren is more famous for, her name, maiden AND married, or her philanthropic work. The FEED Project was created in 2005. Lauren designed a bag for the UN World Food Program and the proceeds will help lessen world hunger and provide basic human needs.

Hung On U was born when Patti Hansen's daughters were rummaging thru their famous mom's closet and found these cool bags she used to wear in the 70's. The girls started wearing them and they became wildly popular. Updated and redesigned, Hung On U now profits cancer research.

Rebecca Taylor had her famous friends, from the likes of Jessica Alba to Kristen Bell, design a tote; in part to celebrate the opening of a new store in LA with the proceeds of these bags going to Dress for Success. I love this organization because it empowers women; it gives them the clothes they need to feel confident enough to go out on job interviews. Women helping women, that's what I'm talking about.

Ana Marie Eder for Spoon created "of the moment" Mochila bags that became wildly popular. Many mochilla bags are woven by Wayuu tribeswomen. They are quite beautiful and very labor intensive. The Wayuu Taya Foundation which "helps [to] improve the lives of Latin-American indigenous people while maintaining and respecting their traditions, culture and beliefs."

They were so popular in fact ~ when Vogue featured them and J. Crew carried them this past summer they sold out immediately.

Barney's does it again, this time BIGGER. They always do a wonderful job with their Christmas windows; so clever and fantastical ~ then, they tie in a cross promotion throughout the store. This year's theme is Lady Gaga, a Holiday Workshop, their holiday fantasy on steroids.

Under the direction of Gaga's creative director Nicola Formichetti and Assume Vivid Astro Focus (an internationally recognized multi media company), Santa's workshop GAGA's way, was born. They tied in sets, displays, art work, and packaging. It's all GAGA! I love the crazy, colorful graphics that lead you through the maze of marketing mania.

They started with the 12 days of GAGA, each day introducing a new Gaga related item.

The whole 5th floor is devoted to GAGA merchandise. Fire press-on nails, check; studded fingerless gloves, check; lace covered glasses, check. 25% of the proceeds will go to her charity, Born this Way
Foundation which promotes youth empowerment and equality.

With all the talk of the upcoming auction of Elizabeth Taylor's jewels, couture and assorted artwork through Christie's, I wanted to take a look back at a life well lived, materially speaking.

The original of a much reproduced lithograph by Warhol, signed; estimate $30,000 to $50,000.00

I was trying to make my way to her Bel Air home, but I was so seduced by the jewels!! I'm sure the estimates are on the lower side, and the pieces will go for much more based on their extraordinary history. There will be an online auction from Dec. 3rd to the 17th, to coincide with the in house auction from Dec. 13th to 16th.

The online auction is touted as having about 1,000 items in the lower priced catagory, for those of us with shallow pockets, but the Bulgari snake watch is calling my name (story of my life).

The Mike Todd diamond antique tiara, circa 1880. Old mine cut diamonds, estimate: $60,000.00

to $80,000.00

The famous, flawless "Richard Burton" 33.19 carat diamond ring, flanked by baquettes set in platinum; estimate between $2.5 to $3.5 million. She did say, "Big girls need big diamonds."

The Taj Mahal necklace by Cartier; estimate $300,000.00 to $500,000.00. You have to admit, the woman had extraordinary taste.

Elizabeth's home sold after being on the market 33 days. It was bought by an undisclosed buyer for an undisclosed price. Architectural Digest happened to be shooting the home in March of 2011 when Elizabeth died, but they were told to continue. I'm glad they did. It really had a timeless quality to it.
The ranch home was previously owned by Nancy Sinatra Sr.

I have been in so many tract houses that all have that same standard, unframed mirror over the sink in the powder and bathrooms. In an effort to frame it quickly and easily, the Mirror Mate was born.

No more unfinished lackluster vanity mirrors ~ Give them definition, character, a sense of place.

Before, It's nice, but it could be better! Look familiar ~

After, the weight of the frame creates interest, a tableau, if you will; like an exclamation point!

You can get creative. I like how the homeowners framed this mirrored wall.

I went to The Museum of Arts and Design, better known as MAD and saw an exhibit that literally stopped me in my tracks.

As part of their exhibition ~ Korean Eye: Energy and Matter, I had the pleasure of seeing one of the most mesmerizing sites.

Artist Lee Nam Lee calling on traditional Eastern art overlaid it with modern digital technology to create the most achingly beautiful video art. I have never seen anything like it! Even my husband was blown away! This video does not do it justice. The end of the video is really closer to what I saw.

The five screen panel series took you thru the four seasons. Rain washes over the screens and subtle colors change, like a stroke from a water color paint brush ushering in spring. The light changes again and summer brings the lazy movement of people doing ordinary tasks along with the sound of water cascading over rocks and birds chirping. Autumn brings different colors, sepia like, readying us for the beauty of the gently falling snow of winter; smoke gently billowing out of a smokestack and the clear moonlight.
I could have stood there for hours, lost in that world.

It's worth the price of admission. The exhibit runs thru Feb. 2012. You'd be mad not to go to the MAD.
It's a great little museum on Columbus Circle.

...sexy, shagreen. I mentioned awhile back that I was doing a home with an Art Deco vibe. I did a post on finding the perfect screen. We were making our way through the living room and dining room and I decided we MUST have a shagreen cocktail table.

Skatemoderne makes beautiful faux shagreen couture pieces. The inlaid agate tables are to die for! I have a call in to them as we speak.

Shagreen is the skin of a stingray. It's pebbly hide is decorative, durable, and adaptable for use in almost any application. Its exoticism makes it a great choice if you want to up the "Wow" factor.

Thinking Outside The (Orange) Box

Pascale Mussard, the artistic director and the great, great, great granddaughter of Thierry Hermès has come up with a brilliant idea. Since she was a child playing in the Paris atelier, Pascale began collecting scrapes of leather, crocodile skin, beautiful buckles, and trinkets. The thought of repurposing these luxury materials into something new forms the "Petit h" collection.

Mussard explains, "The idea is simple: Since everything at Hermès is of the finest quality, and almost everything is made by hand, there are inevitable mistakes or imperfections that render otherwise flawless materials unusable." A beautiful scarf that takes 300 people to make is rendered useless if there is one stain, one pull in the otherwise flawless silk. Why not make it into a unique accordion pleated necklace? It's an idea who's time has not just come, but is way over due!

These perfectly imperfect materials are given to artists, and they must reuse the materials to invent something wonderful that did not previously exist. A laboratory of sorts was set up, and the experiments commenced. If a collaboration is really successful, it may be used in the "Grand h" collection. Hermès will put it into production later on.

Mussard wants Grand h to be thought of as high end arts and crafts. Quality materials being repurposed by creative designers that represent and respect the Hermès name.

There are 2,200 pieces in the traveling show. Once they're gone, they're gone, because of the unique nature of the items being made based on the materials available.

Giant leather pandas, light fixtures from carafes (because of an air bubble), a leather clad swing, toys and games. They are only limited by their imagination!

This one has got to be my favorite. For the person who has everything this holiday season: a cup cozy. Your Starbucks in the morning will never look the same. Mussard wanted everyone to be able to embrace a little Hermès in their lives.

Hurry, it's a traveling show. It will be in New York and on line thru November 22nd. Everyone needs a little Hermès in their life. Don't they?

Mark Rothko: Seeing Red

I finally had the opportunity to see the show Red. It was about Mark Rothko and his commission to paint panels for the Four Seasons Restaurant in the Seagrams Building. Ultimately, it did not work out and he cut ties. Mark did not think it was a suitable environment for his work.

I am always fascinated by artists' back stories. What inspired a certain work or in what period they were in their personal or professional lives?

Mark Rothko was a Russian born, abstract expressionist painter known for his large scale color field paintings.

There are deep meanings behind these cubes, rectangles, and boxes. Rothko hated explaining the meaning, he wanted you to FEEL the painting, not just look at it.

Rothko employed a lot of different techniques to draw you into the painting. The subtle play of opacity or the amount of luminosity. The warm and cool variations create a layered depth. It wasn't out of the question for Rothko to change the orientation of the painting half or three quarters of the way thru. The goal was always to make you feel enveloped in the canvas.

Rothko was a philosopher at heart. He was very influenced by Freidrich Nietzsche and his teachings. Always questioning the human experience, values, religion, emotions, and ideas. There had to be a connection, an intimate experience with the painting. Can't a painting sometimes, just be a painting?

Upon first observation, you wouldn't think to put an oversized picture to one side of a fireplace ~ the root lamp however balances the height and weight on the opposite side; therefore it works!

There is A LOT going on in this bedroom. I am fascinated by the mismatched wooden window cornices. For some, the different patterns may be too jarring in the bedroom. That said, the scale of the patterns and the recurring color pink keep your eyes dancing around the room.

I personally would never block a window, but maybe there is an ugly view that can be hidden while still utilizing the light from above. The lacquered screen further diffuses the light around the room. Either way, a decorative statement was successfully made.

Big light fixtures make a big impact in the kitchen. The continuation of the industrial feel and similar material make it look fresh in a work horse of a room. The island and table are enough to anchor the fixtures; all 3 of them!

Who says a room must function only as what is was meant to? Extra storage beautifully displayed in the bath becomes a clever use of carved out space as well as a decorative element! It's a muti-tasking beauty.

Michael Bruno and 1st Dibs did it again. As if I needed another reason to spend more time sitting in front of my computer screen, now they feature hot properties and fine homes for sale spanning the globe.

Of course I want to see what goodies fill The Normandy House, a very prestigious home in Southampton, NY that is currently on the market for 35 million.

Or this lovely estate in Los Angeles, created by Windsor Smith. With its blank slate, she was able to weave her magic. It is reminiscent of a Kentucky horse farm, with a twist! It can be yours for 11.96 million.

Who couldn't appreciate the gentrified Villa Contenta? A 75 million dollar compound perched on a prime bluff in Malibu.

Yes, I want to know what lies beyond the gates of this Malibu estate as well. It is calling to me. In these homes, a theatre is de rigueur, but how many can boast an aviary or auto museum?

I see myself padding around this home overlooking Gramercy Park in New York. I'm so adaptable! The only thing standing in my way is the 21.4 million I need to walk thru the door. I can see myself in many of these places, behind many of these gates. That's the beauty of getting lost in the fantasy of fine homes.

From Malibu to Montecito, Palm Beach to Park Ave, there is something for everyone. Search 1st Dibs Real Estate by location, designer picks, types of properties. They all boast major WOW factor! Beware, it's addictive. Make sure you have loads of time and a comfortable seat.

I'll just keep idling the hours away voyeuristically enjoying the homes of "the rich and famous." I lost a whole day. I couldn't stop, couldn't turn away. That's when the trouble began...I started rearranging my house. My husband's gonna kill me!

Ralph Lauren~ His Unwavering Vision

I am still basking in the afterglow of attending An Evening with Ralph Lauren. Oprah hosted the event held at Lincoln Center. It was a continuation of a conversation that the two had started on her talk show. It ended on a stage in Alice Tully Hall, with tears (mostly by me) and a respect for Ralph and his accomplishments that I can barely put into words.

The two have become good friends and they have quite a lot in common. Ralph expressed his unwavering vision and belief in himself as the primary reason for his success. His empire came out of a dream that he himself wanted, a way of life! He remained vigilant and very focused.

Trust your instincts and stay true to who you are.

It all starts with the tie story. Ralph created wide ties when everyone was wearing thin ties. He created the polo pony logo because he liked the idea of polo and it was classic (remember* create the dream). Many, especially those at Bloomingdales in NY, whose opinions really mattered to Ralph at the time, wanted him to make some changes; thin the ties a bit and create the ties under their name. In exchange they would give him a huge order. Ralph said, "NO!" Bloomingdales came back to Ralph 6 months later and put in a nice order without changing a thing!

Ralph was the first fashion designer to create a home division in the early 1980's. He believed in his kind of all American classicism and that extended beyond the closet. His is a lifestyle brand. He has grown Polo into a muti-billion dollar company because "Style is international."

Oprah asked Ralph how he keeps himself fresh and relevant after 40 years. Ralph said, "Fear and not following trends." Then we were treated to a fashion show featuring the 2012 spring collection. I am gonna need a sorbet colored boa!

Ralph is unapologetic about all his success. He loves the life he leads and the ability to lead the life he aspired to. After all, he will tell you ~ he did it by himself, his way. But what really feeds him besides his family is giving back!

I love the use of words as a decorative element in a room. They can be high art, witty, funky, descriptive, or just decorative. The font tells a story as well. I love the glittery words on canvas that Camomile is known for. She is a favorite of the Novogratz's. And speaking of the Novagratz's, they often use words in different forms on many of their projects.

L'Object of My Affection

L'Object pour Fortuny is a new tabletop collection years in the making. Elad Yifrach, president of L'Object collaborated with the house of Fortuny. Elad poured over the archival fabrics for inspiration and to see which patterns would best translate into tabletop.

The rich fabrics and beautiful designs are at once old world and contemporary. Renaissance designer Mariano Fortuny created fashion, fabrics and lighting. He was a sculptor, photographer, and painter who started out as a set designer.

These opulent fabrics have always made my heart beat a little faster! The designs have translated magnificently. The 7th floor of Bergdorf Goodman is a Fortuny treasure trove of delights. The collection will arrive in selected Neiman Marcus stores as well.

“We are really excited to see our fabrics and patterns expressed in a different medium, inspiring a new collection of timeless pieces,” said Mickey Riad, co-owner with Maury Riad, of Fortuny. “Seeing our patterns take on a new life through this collaboration with L’Objet is such a pleasure.”

I expect under the direction of the Riad brothers and collaborations with notable designers, including one of my favorites, Barry Dixon ~ we will be seeing Fortuny fabrics showing up in fresh and inspiring new ways.

I can't mention Fortuny without pointing out Mariano designed my favorite fixture.

Creating Heirlooms of the Future

The Keno Brothers, Leigh and Leslie are funny, really funny and passionate about well made furniture. I recently had an opportunity to hear them speak, interrupt each other, and finish each others sentences, all while describing their new furniture line.

While in High Point the boys were inspired by a tea cart with carved claw feet. The brothers were impressed with the quality, craftsmanship and the price tag of $700.00. It reminded Leslie of a similar piece he had sold at auction for a record 8.5 million by John Goddard. They could do this!

The boys partnered with Theodore Alexander to create a beautiful line of organic, classically styled with a modern influence, case goods collection made out of exotic woods.

Their furniture is both sensuous and sculptural. Every piece is actually a series of curves, and flared when possible. There are very few straight lines. Given the line's price point and craftsmanship with it's exposed dovetailing, beautiful hardware, and using the lost wax process with a hand rubbed finish ~ I think you get a lot of bang for your buck.

Inside and out, these pieces are impeccable. Trompe l'oeil artists paint the veneer pieces so you'll never see seams. They always look like they were made from a solid piece of wood; in some cases they are, but not always. Since they are hand rubbed to a high shine, all you want to do is touch them.

Their top seller is the slope chair. It is a feat of engineering with it's sloping shape. The arms fit under any desk and the seat, somewhat like a Windsor, cradles you.

I should also mention, the furniture looks different in different light. Like paint, it changes throughout the day.

Attention to detail was priority number 1. The beverage shelf in this cabinet is lined with felt, the drawers all glide seamlessly, and the hardware is gorgeous. Leigh told us a story that one consideration for the finished product was that if you were drunk and fell on the floor and looked up at the furniture from some weird angle, it had better look good! Cheers to that !

There will be about 120 pieces in the collection with upholstery and lighting rolling out next. I am so impressed with this line, I can't wait to see what else this dynamic duo will do (say that 5 times fast).

The Keno brothers are also embracing new technology. Each piece of furniture will have a barcode on an accompanying tag for your mobile device. Once you scan the tag, a description, back story, or inspiration about that piece of furniture becomes available to you and an instant heirloom is created!

Lighten Up (for Spring)

I know it's not even winter yet but with fashion week in New York and Paris behind us, the wise color forecasters at Pantone have dictated which spring 2012 colors we'll be seeing. Many are based on what we've seen on the runways, since home, fashion, and interior design are so closely related. This is an example of what rooms may be wearing, because, "Consumers look to spring for renewed energy, optimism, and the promise of a brighter day," said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director for the Pantone Insitute. I'll look forward to it ~ after I get thru this winter!

Brighter or subdued, these vivacious, enticing colors with just the right amount of neutral need not summarize a season. They are timeless. Is it coincidental that these colors work beautifully together as well?

Pantone's Fashion and Home division also came up with 175 NEW (nuanced) colors. They have a library of over 2,100 colors. "Who knew there were so many colors to choose from?"

Shopping For A Cause

You either love 'em or hate 'em but the Magnolia Bakery always seems to elicit some kind of reaction. They're growing strong, with their newest outpost at the NYC Bloomingdales. For each Pink Ribbon Cupcake sold, they are donating 50 cents to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Eat up!

I love to buy things that I actually use AND I know a percentage of the profit is going to a good cause. Every year so much merchandise comes out in pink. My picks this year (besides the cupcakes) are:

There's always room in my closet for another pair of Tory Burch Reva flats. This time in limited edition hot pink. Tory is donating 15% of the cost of the shoe to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. You could walk the 3 day in these shoes they're so comfortable!
