Fancying Flat Weaves

Maybe it's the heat, maybe it's my need for change, maybe I am smitten because a beach house project has me searching for "something else, something new," but I have fallen for flat weave rugs.  They were never really on my radar.  I always gravitated towards the flat weaves plush, high pile counterpart, but I am feeling adventurous.

They feel crisp and contemporary (even in a most traditional pattern).  They are as practical as they are beautiful.  You can turn them over to double the life span of the rug.  With a plethora of design options,  Navajo, oriental, geometric, stripe, in bold, fun colors, or a natural neutral, the looks are limitless!

Flat weave rugs are usually tightly woven from cotton and/or wool.  The ease of cleaning makes them a perfect option for homes with pets, kids, or allergy sufferers!

I am really excited to choose a fun rug for my beach house project.  The hard part is always deciding between all the wonderful options.

Denim Is Doing it ... Again

Hermes

Swimming in a sea of indigo or denim this coming spring is:  EVERYTHING.  From handbags to home decor, from scarves to slipcovers, the timeless, utilitarian textile is once again returning, and it feels as fresh as the day it was introduced.

Inspired by Japanese textiles, these carpets are more like art underfoot, each telling a story

but ~ the recycled option at West Elm is awesome also.

If you want to be bowled over, you should see this midnight blue Baccarat chandelier in person.  It is drop dead to die for.  Denim dresses the shades, and if you can put it on a $40,000.00 chandelier, you can put it on anything!

Adding that washed (just not acid washed, not now anyway) appeal is like the 80's all over again ~ but more refined.

Kudos if it has a homemade hand or ethnic vibe

From inky blues to chambrays and dark washes, denim represents a sense of comfort.  It is a neutral that literally goes with anything, and has a fresh edginess.  There is a sophistication to this "new denim" look; a tidy and timeless appeal.

Spotlight On: Madeline Weinrib

Madeline Weinrib, the granddaughter of the founder of ABC Carpet and Home (one of my favorite stores) is busy with the release of a new wallpaper for Studio Printworks and is covering modernist furniture in her signature ethnic prints for a show in a Chelsea Gallery.  When not globetrotting for inspiration and shopping for vintage textiles, Madeline can be found in her 6th floor atelier in ABC where she sells her beautiful silk pillows, artisanal carpets, accessories, a growing furniture line and fabric by the yard that ( I swear) looks good on ANYTHING!  Madeline is also a trustee of Project Mala, a non profit dedicated to eradicating child labor in the carpet industry.

I never met an Ikat I didn't like!

These pictures, below, from Elle Decor let us glimpse into Madeline's home in NYC.  I love to see how designers/artists live and decorate for themselves.  No doubt her eclectic collections have been gathered from far away places.
